What Symptoms May Appear Years Before Dementia?

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered that dementia symptoms may manifest up to nine years before a formal diagnosis. Early identification of these warning signs could enable interventions when they’re most effective.

According to Nol Swaddiwudhipong, a junior doctor at the university, “This is a step towards us being able to screen people who are at greatest risk—for example, people over 50 or those who have high blood pressure or do not do enough exercise—and intervene at an earlier stage.”

The research, published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia, identified three key early warning indicators:

1. Poorer Cognitive Test Performance

Researchers examined half a million UK participants aged 40-69, testing problem-solving abilities, memory, reaction times, and grip strength. Those with lower test scores showed increased likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia.

2. Recent Falls

Individuals later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease were more prone to experiencing falls within the previous year. Those who developed progressive supranuclear palsy (a rare neurological condition affecting balance) were more than twice as likely to have fallen compared to healthy individuals.

3. Poorer Overall Health Status

Study participants in poor general health demonstrated elevated risks for developing various conditions screened in the research, including Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Important Perspective

Dr. Tim Rittman, senior study author, cautioned against unnecessary alarm: “People should not be unduly worried if, for example, they are not good at recalling numbers.” He emphasized that healthy individuals naturally vary in cognitive performance but recommended consulting a general practitioner if memory concerns develop.
