Will Eating Walnuts Help Me Live Longer?

Will Eating Walnuts Help Me Live Longer?

A recent study suggests that incorporating walnuts into your diet early in life may support heart health and longevity. Researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health examined data from approximately 3,000 young adults aged 18 to 30 who participated in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, published in Nutrition, Metabolism, and Cardiovascular Disease.

Study Design and Methodology

Participants were categorized based on nut consumption patterns:

  • 352 walnut consumers
  • 2,494 other nut consumers
  • 177 no nut consumers

Average daily walnut intake was about three-fourths of an ounce, while other nut consumers averaged one and a half ounces daily. Researchers tracked participants’ heart disease risk factors over 30 years, including diet, smoking status, body composition, blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood glucose levels.

Key Findings

After 30 years of follow-up, walnut consumers demonstrated several health advantages:

  • Higher physical activity levels and lower body mass index compared to non-walnut eaters
  • Improved cardiovascular markers, including lower blood pressure and triglyceride levels
  • Better blood sugar control, with significantly lower fasting glucose concentrations
  • Greater weight stability relative to other nut consumers
  • Higher overall diet quality scores according to the Healthy Eating Index 2015

Nutritional Benefits

According to the research, a daily one-ounce serving – or roughly a handful – of walnuts provides a wide range of beneficial nutrients. Walnuts are the only nuts that provide an excellent source of omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and also contain fiber, manganese, magnesium, copper, iron, calcium, zinc, potassium, vitamin B6, folate, and thiamin.

The findings align with current Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend incorporating nuts into your diet for optimal health outcomes.
